Feeling Bad From Zeolite Detox? Why Taking More Rather Than Less May Be the Answer

November 2, 2026•6 min read

You started zeolite, and a few days in you have a dull headache or feel a little wiped out. The natural move is to back off. After years of helping customers through their first weeks, Mark Williams often suggests something that sounds backwards: if you're on a small amount and your symptoms are mild, try taking more.

If you feel mildly off on a small amount of zeolite, moving up to the full label amount may help, and some people go on to two doses a day. This comes from Mark's experience, not a clinical trial. If symptoms are severe, getting worse or lasting, stop and call your healthcare provider.

Why would taking more zeolite help when you feel bad?

The thinking is about balance. Zeolite is a binder, so it can only carry out what it can hold. If your body is moving more than a small amount of zeolite can carry, more binder may help things leave. No clinical study has tested this idea, so treat it as practical experience.

Nobody lives in a perfectly clean world. Processed food, everyday environmental exposures, stress and thin sleep all add to what your body's natural detox systems handle each day. Zeolite is one way to support those systems: its cage-like structure attracts certain positively charged compounds in the gut so they can pass out with normal waste.*

That's why Mark's advice runs against instinct. In his experience, most people don't get side effects from pure zeolite at all. When someone on a really small amount does get a headache, fatigue or a general blah feeling, he's found that taking somewhat more, within the guidelines, is often the better first move than quitting. Many customers have told us the same, though individual experiences vary.*

It's the same logic behind our article on the re-tox effect: what matters is whether elimination keeps pace.

Feeling bad is never proof that zeolite is working. Many people feel nothing unusual and do just fine.

When should you stop instead of taking more?

This advice is only for mild symptoms that are steady or improving, in healthy adults. Stop and call your healthcare provider if symptoms are severe, getting worse or not clearly better within a few days. Talk to your provider before changing your amount if you take medication or have a health condition.
  • Stop and call your provider: anything severe, anything getting worse, anything not clearly better within a few days, or any new symptom you can't explain.
  • Get urgent care: signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, swelling or trouble breathing, or severe stomach pain.
  • Don't increase on your own: if you take any medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have kidney disease, osteoporosis or another ongoing condition. Talk to your provider first. Binders may affect how medications are absorbed.
  • Don't give more to children. Our zeolite products are made for adults.

What should you check before taking more zeolite?

Check water, regularity and timing first. Too little water can bring on headaches and fatigue by itself, and a binder needs fluid to move through you. If you're constipated, don't take more yet. Get things moving first with water and fiber, and ask your provider whether magnesium citrate is right for you.
  • Water: have a full glass with every serving and keep drinking through the day, until your urine is pale yellow.
  • Regularity: you want to be having regular bowel movements before you add more binder. Fiber from vegetables, fruit and whole grains helps. If you're drinking plenty and still constipated, a magnesium citrate supplement often helps.
  • Other changes: cutting back on coffee, a new diet and new supplements can all cause headaches or fatigue. If you changed several things at once, zeolite may not be the cause.
  • Your actual amount: a half scoop or one capsule a day is well below the label. That's the situation this advice is written for.

How much zeolite can you take if you decide to increase?

First move up to the full label amount and hold for a few days. ZeoForce's label allows up to 3 capsules twice daily. HolyLand's label is 1 scoop once a day; Mark's view is that some people can take a second scoop, but that goes beyond the label. Space doses about 8 hours apart.

ZeoForce

The ZeoForce label says to take 3 capsules a day with a glass of water, and that you may take up to 3 capsules twice daily. Don't go past that. At the higher amount you'd get 1,200 mg of zeolite, 10 mg of zinc and 100 mcg of selenium a day, so check any multivitamin you also take for those two minerals. A bottle lasts 15 days instead of 30.

HolyLand Zeolite Cleanse

The HolyLand Zeolite Cleanse label says 1 scoop (5 g) once a day, and that's the amount we direct. Mark's personal view is that healthy adults who want a more thorough detox, or who feel mildly off on less, may do well with 5 g twice a day, about 8 hours apart, for up to 90 days. If you try that, you're going beyond the label, so it's worth running it by your healthcare provider. At that rate a 400 g tub lasts 40 days.

How to step up

  • Change one thing at a time. Move up one step, then hold for a few days.
  • Add water as you add zeolite. Have a full glass with each serving.
  • Keep your spacing. Take each serving at least 2 hours apart from other supplements. If you take medication, your provider should advise on timing.
  • Reassess. If you feel better, stay there or return to the label amount. If you don't, stop and call your provider.

Some people prefer to start low and build slowly, and that's fine too. If less feels better for you, go with what your body is telling you.

Is it safe to take zeolite twice a day?

A 2018 scientific review concluded that clinoptilolite may be regarded as safe to consume when quality is controlled, and human trials have used 6 to 9 grams a day of one certified material. Those results may not apply to every zeolite, and 10 grams a day is above the amounts used in those trials.

The 2018 review also stressed that each clinoptilolite material differs and that human studies are still limited. Clinical trials of one micronized clinoptilolite found no meaningful mineral changes at 6 g a day over 28 days and 12 weeks. In a four-year trial of people with osteoporosis at 9 g a day, copper, sodium and calcium dipped below reference values at points, so the authors suggested mineral checks for that group. Those trials were funded by the material's manufacturer.

A few animal studies have raised questions about the kidneys at high intakes. Those haven't been confirmed in humans, but they're one more reason to stay hydrated and talk to your provider if you have kidney concerns. Separately, the zeolite behind cancer warnings is erionite, a fibrous form that is a hazard when inhaled. It isn't clinoptilolite, the form used in supplements.

Purity matters more as the amount goes up. Every batch of HolyLand is third-party tested for 9 heavy metals, including mercury, lead, cadmium and arsenic, plus microbial contaminants, and a Certificate of Analysis is available on request. Frequently asked questions

Does feeling bad mean zeolite is working?

No. Discomfort isn't a measure of whether zeolite is working, and many people feel nothing unusual. Mild symptoms deserve a check of your water, regularity and amount. Severe, worsening or lasting symptoms are a reason to stop and call your healthcare provider, not something to push through.

Can zeolite cause headaches?

Some people report mild headaches or fatigue when they start. Check your water first, since dehydration alone can cause both. If you're on a small amount and it's mild, moving up to the label amount may help. If headaches are severe or don't clear within a few days, stop and call your provider.

Can I take ZeoForce twice a day?

Yes, within the label. ZeoForce's suggested use is 3 capsules a day with a glass of water, and you may take up to 3 capsules twice daily. Don't exceed 6 capsules a day. Talk to your provider first if you take medication or have a health condition.

Can I take zeolite powder twice a day?

HolyLand's label directs 1 scoop (5 g) once a day. Mark's personal view is that some healthy adults do well on 5 g twice a day, about 8 hours apart, but that goes beyond the label. Run it by your healthcare provider first, and drink a full glass of water with each serving.

What if taking more zeolite makes me feel worse?

Stop and call your healthcare provider. Taking more is only worth trying for mild symptoms on a small amount, and only if things improve. If you feel worse after stepping up, don't keep going. Tell your provider what you took and how much.
